Right then, settle in with your cuppa because tomorrow brings us the Dark Moon in Scorpio, and if you thought British weather got bloody cold bloody quick, you haven’t met this lunar mood.

What’s All This About, Then?

The Dark Moon—that delicious sliver of time before the New Moon when the sky goes properly dark and witchy—is landing in Scorpio on the 20th. Now, Scorpio doesn’t do anything by halves. This sign invented intensity, probably whilst wearing all black and listening to The Cure. When the moon goes dark in Scorpio’s territory, we’re not just scratching the surface; we’re tunnelling straight down to the basement of our psyche, finding things we’d forgotten we’d hidden, and having a proper sort-through.

The Reed: Scorpio’s Druidic Companion

In the Celtic Druid tradition, we’re currently in the time of Reed (Ngetal), which runs from 28th October to 24th November. Rather fitting, isn’t it? The Reed grows in those liminal spaces—neither quite water nor quite land—bending but never breaking, its roots deep in the muck whilst reaching for the sky.

The Druids knew what they were about. Reed represents resilience, protection, and the ability to navigate between worlds. It’s the plant that thrives in the in-between places, much like Scorpio thrives in the space between life and death, light and shadow, “fine thanks” and “actually, I’m having an existential crisis.”

Reed also symbolizes direct action and finding one’s path forward, even when the way seems murky. The Celts used it for making arrows—talk about getting straight to the point, which is very Scorpio when you think about it.

Obsidian: Your Pocket-Sized Truth Mirror

For this Dark Moon, we’re turning to **Obsidian**, volcanic glass formed in the earth’s most dramatic moments. Black as a London sky in January, this stone is Scorpio’s spiritual twin—formed under pressure, sharp enough to cut through nonsense, and reflecting back truths you might not want to see (but probably need to).

Obsidian is your psychic bouncer, showing illusions the door whilst protecting your energy field. It’s particularly brilliant during Dark Moon work because it doesn’t faf about with niceties. Got shadow work to do? Obsidian’s essentially handing you a torch and saying, “In you go then, best get on with it.”

The Mayans used it for scrying mirrors, and honestly, there’s something very British about staring into a black stone and confronting uncomfortable truths. We invented queuing and apologizing when someone else bumps into us, after all. We can handle a bit of shadow integration.

Working with the Dark Moon in Scorpio

This isn’t the time for vision boards and manifestation journals, darling. This is the time for:

Shadow spelunking - What are you still carrying that’s past its sell-by date? Scorpio Dark Moon energy is brilliant for releasing what’s festering beneath the surface. Write it down, burn it safely (fire alarm permitting), and let it go.

Ancestral acknowledgment - With the veil still thin post-Samhain and Reed connecting us to our roots, this is powerful time to honour those who came before. Light a candle, pour out some tea (or something stronger), and have a chat with your beloveds who’ve crossed over.

Truth-telling - Obsidian in hand, ask yourself the questions you’ve been dodging. Scorpio energy doesn’t judge; it just wants authenticity. Be honest about what’s working and what’s died but you haven’t buried yet.

Rest and restore - The Dark Moon is nature’s reset button. You’re allowed to be knackered. You’re allowed to decline that social engagement. Your energy is yours to protect.

A Wee Ritual for the Dark Moon

Create sacred space (lock the door so the cat doesn’t interrupt). Hold your Obsidian and take three deep breaths—proper ones, none of this shallow business.

Ask yourself: “What transformation am I resisting?”

Let the Reed’s wisdom guide you—bend, don’t break. Let Scorpio’s intensity show you what needs examining. Let Obsidian reflect the truth back to you.

Then, because this is Britain and we’re practical folk, make yourself another cup of tea and carry on. Integration is a process, not a destination.

Until the New Moon

The darkness before the dawn is where the magic happens, where we compost the old to feed the new. So embrace the void, have a good rummage through your psyche’s attic, and trust that Scorpio knows what it’s doing, even if we don’t.

The light returns soon enough. For now, let’s get comfortable with the dark.

Blessed Dark Moon, you magnificent creatures.

Remember: If the shadows feel too heavy, reach out to a trusted friend, counsellor, or practitioner. Shadow work is brave work, but you don’t have to do it alone.
